Manali is the Himalayan holiday most Indian families picture — snow at Solang, apple orchards in Kullu, hot springs at Vashisht and a river running through the whole valley. It is also the trip where poor planning costs the most: Rohtang needs a permit, the drive from Delhi is fourteen hours, and the wrong season means either no snow or no road. Here is how to get it right.
Where Manali is, and how to reach it
Manali sits at 2,050 m in Himachal's Kullu Valley, 540 km from Delhi. By road it is 12-14 hours via Chandigarh, Bilaspur and Mandi. Most travellers drive overnight or break the journey at Chandigarh.
A common and comfortable plan is Delhi → Shimla (2 nights) → Manali (3 nights) → Delhi, which spreads the driving and adds a second hill station for very little extra time.
Solang Valley
Thirteen km from Manali, Solang is the adventure hub — paragliding, zorbing, ropeway and ATV rides in summer; skiing and snow play from December to February. Book activities through your driver or hotel rather than roadside touts, and confirm the price before starting.
Rohtang Pass and the permit rules
Rohtang (3,978 m) is open roughly May to October and requires an online permit from the Himachal government portal. Only a limited number of vehicles are allowed per day, permits are date-specific, and diesel vehicles older than ten years are barred.
Apply at least a week ahead. If Rohtang is closed or permits are exhausted, Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul is an excellent alternative — snow views without the permit, open most of the year.
Temples and heritage
- Hadimba Devi Temple — a 1553 cedar-wood pagoda in a deodar forest, Manali's signature sight
- Manu Temple — dedicated to sage Manu in Old Manali
- Vashisht hot springs — natural sulphur baths five km from town
- Naggar Castle — a 500-year-old stone-and-wood castle with valley views
Kullu on the way
Forty km before Manali, Kullu offers river rafting on the Beas at Pirdi, shawl and Kullu-cap showrooms, and the Great Himalayan National Park further south. Most Kullu Manali tour packages include a rafting stop on the return leg.
Best time to visit Manali
- March to June — pleasant 10-25°C, all activities open, peak family season
- December to February — snow in Manali town, Solang fully white, Rohtang closed
- July to September — monsoon, landslide risk on the Mandi stretch, lowest rates
- October to November — clear skies, sharp mountain views, thin crowds
Five day Manali itinerary
- Day 1: Delhi to Manali (overnight drive or Chandigarh halt)
- Day 2: Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Vashisht springs, Mall Road
- Day 3: Solang Valley activities and Atal Tunnel / Sissu
- Day 4: Naggar Castle, Kullu rafting, shawl factory
- Day 5: Return to Delhi
Practical tips
Altitude affects some visitors above 3,000 m — climb slowly, drink water and avoid heavy meals before Rohtang. Carry cash; card networks are patchy in Solang and Lahaul.
